              Captain Charles D. Phelps, deceased, late of Ashmore Twp.., of the pioneers of Coles County, was born in Madison County, Kentucky on January 26, 1801, he was a son of Jarrot and Milly (Duncan) Phelps, both natives of Virginia.

     He was married March 3, 1825 to Miss Mary Ann Coons, daughter of John and Polly (Crosswhite) Coons, she was born in Fayette County, Kentucky about 8 miles from Lexington, July 29, 1809. 

     In 1830, he removed to Coles County and settled on the farm now occupied by his widow and youngest son.  He purchased and entered about 300 acres of land, was an industrious and successful man, a leading member of the Christian church and led a life consistent with his professions.  

    Coming to Coles County before the Black Hawk War, they had the kickapoos and Pottawatomies Indians for their neighbors.  On the breaking out of the Black Hawk War he volunteered as soldier, was commissioned a Captain an assisted in the capture of the Chief Black Hawk.

        He died December 2, 1864, of his nine children, eight were living at the time of his death, and six are living at the present time.  Josiah, now a resident of this Township,  Jarrot, of Shell City, Missouri,  Mildred A. wife of Addison Bowen, of Johnson County, Kansas,    Mary A., wife of Thomas Adair, Johnson County, Kansas,  Samuel W., who served in the late war, now lives in Schuyler County, Missouri and Charles D., residing on the homestead,  John C., a member of the 123rd I.V.I, died at Nashville, Tennessee, in February 1863,  Susan E., wife of William O'Brien, died April 19, 1866,  Fountain served in the late war and died in 1871 in Schuyler, Missouri.

    Mrs. Phelps still resides on the old home place, about 2 miles South of Ashmore, she has passed through many and severe hardships of those pioneer days, and is now hale and strong at nearly 70 years of age. (copied from: The Coles County, Illinois, excerpt from newspaper Chicago 1879)

     Charles Duncan Phelps, married March 5, 1825, Mary Ann Coons daughter of John  Coons and Polly Crosswhite.  Mary Ann was born July 29, 1809, in Fayette County, Kentucky, about 8 miles from Lexington. 

     They immigrated in 1830 to Ashmore Township, Coles County, Illinois when the County was a primeval forest and settled on the land that was ever after their home.  He entered about 500 acres of land in Coles County. 

     They were leading members of the Christian church.  The community where their home was located was known as Bachelor Ville or Pie Town, which was centered around a general store and a Post Office with probably a blacksmith shop.  Other families living in the area were the Dudleys, Wrights, Wileys, Wills and Alan Burr who was a bachelor as was Mr. Dudley. 

     When they settled there the Pottawatomie and Kickapoo Indians still over ran the country.  On the out break of the Black Hawk War he enlisted and was commissioned Captain assisting in the capture of that Chieftain.  (according to a old Coles County History written by an historian who interviewed Mr. Phelps)
