Mary Phelps Adair born Coles County, Illinois, December 21, 1841, died at her home in Olathe, Kansas March 25, 1942 age 100.  Married Thomas Adair in Coles County, Illinois.  He was born November 23, 1824 Highland County, Ohio, died Olathe, Kansas, May 5, 1913.

Mary Phelps went to Olathe, Kansas in 1859, and for 2 years was clerk in the established Post Office there.  For a number of years she divided her time between Olathe and her home in Illinois.  Her marriage took place after the Civil War to Thomas Adair, and permanently located in Olathe, Kansas, where he opened a general store.

In 1880, they purchased a farm northeast of town, where they lived until Thomas Adair died in 1913.   Mary  Phelps Adair moved into town, where she lived until her death.  On her 100th birthday she was showered with cards and a birthday cake and many flowers, with friends calling to congratulate her.  She had been confined to her bed for a number of years her mind was clear and active but her eye sight was some what dimmed.

She sent $100.00 as her birthday gift to the Christian Church at Olathe, having been a member for 85 years.  She had been a member of only two churches, the one she first joined at Hitesville, Illinois, near where she was born, and the church at Olathe.  She remembers when a girl proudly marching up on Sunday morning to drop a penny in the birthday box.
